Computer Preference, You Decide

If there is one thing that consumers in today's market have a lot of, that is choices. Most of the products that you need are likely to come in a wide variety of brands and kinds. Those looking for computers are not likely to be spared from this difficult decision making process. With all the different choice that we have today, what many of us want to know is whether we should be buying a Desktop, Laptop or Netbook. Here are some things to help you figure out which one is for you exactly.

Desktop

If you are looking something that is fairly affordable and will serve you well, then a desktop is your best bet. Of course, this is given the fact that you do not have a need to take it along with you. For those with families and large businesses this is an ideal buy since you can just put it in your home or company and leave it there. It is also a good choice for people who actually have an office that they can use regularly since it is the most ergonomic of all choices. The Keyboard allows enough room for your arms and hands while typing, plus height isn't really a problem since you use it with a desk and chair. In terms of performance we all know that it can contain all the data and programs that you need because it can easily be expanded with very few limits.

Laptop

For people who are constantly on the go and need to stay connected or those with a limited amount of space a laptop may do the job. Of course we all know that these cost a lot more than desktops but at least many of today's laptops can compete with what desktops offer; although these still cannot top desktops. Many of the laptops today come with webcams, DVD/CD writer and great displays. The battery also gives you the freedom to use this for a few hours without being plugged in. One consideration though with laptops is the difficulty with upgrading and finding replacement parts in case it breaks down. Parts can often be expensive and hard to replace.

Netbook

Others do not understand why they should go for a Netbook instead of a laptop. Well, if you have looked at the price tags then you will know that the latter is definitely more expensive. For those who practically live on airplanes and need to have access to a computer, this is a good solution. It is ultra portable given its size and it performs fairly well. Of course it does not come with frills like a DVD/CD writer and others, but it will get your work done. Plus, a good thing is that you can easily upgrade or expand this without much trouble. One thing that Netbook buyers will have to consider eventually is how long a computer this small will last.

Apple Apps Listed

It's no secret to anyone who knows me or reads this blog that I have a love/hate (but mostly love) relationship with Apple products. I currently own an iPhone, iPod Nano and MacBook Pro. The iPad is on my radar and one of these days I'm going to go all in and get another iMac.

Of all the Apple gadgets I own - frankly of all the gadgets I own period - my iPhone is the most used. It's like a growth; permanently attached to my hand. I eat with it at the table, I sleep with it on my nightstand. Sometimes I even take it in the bathroom with me. Too much information, right? Sorry.

I know that I'm not alone in my obsession. Hubby can't even find fault with this one. I think he might have figured out a way to implant his phone into his arm ( or at least he should).

There are all kinds of websites and magazines one can refer to for suggestions on the best, latest and greatest apps for your iPhone, iPod or iPad, but I've often found many of them too cluttered with apps that are too techie for most people or that are downright useless. Despite the fact that my desk looks like both an office supply and bookstore threw up on it, I like to keep my iPhone organized and practical with only the apps I actually use on a regular basis. Many of these apps have actually saved me time and money. Even the ones that are not free have paid for themselves several times over.

So in the interest of sharing and being a good web citizen, I present to you the best list of apps ever compiled. And just in case you're wondering, with your nosey self, I am not getting paid to endorse any of these (though I wouldn't be opposed to the idea).

I have several great apps I would like to share, so I'll break them down into 2 posts because, if you're like me, you'll lose interest if this thing drags on too long. And for those who have other smartphones like the Droid or Blackberry, don't worry. I believe a lot of these apps (or similar counterparts) are available for you as well.

Bejeweled 2 - It's the only game app I have. I'm not much of a gamer, but I like to have a good stress reliever on hand. I literally can play this game for an hour without blinking. It's also good for making you look busy when you're in a waiting room sitting next to an overly chatty person. Just put your phone on vibrate and get to sliding those jewels around. You'll have the most intense look of concentration on your face. Like you're running a corporation right from your phone. The other people will be thinking, geesh, she's a busy woman.

Moviefone - If you're a movie buff like me, this app will be your best friend. Once you set it up initially with your location, the latest show times and theaters within a 30 mile radius are right at your fingertips. You can also watch trailers and get the latest movie news. Remember those days when we used to look in the newspaper to get the show times? It was the most frustrating thing. Do they still print that information?

CBS Radio - I only have 3 songs downloaded on my phone, so this app works great for me when I'm out and about and have forgotten to pack my iPod. It's great for times when you just want to hear talk radio from other cities around the country instead of hearing the same old rhetoric from your local hosts. I'm not one of those folks whose migrated all of my music from my iPod over to my iPhone. I prefer to keep these separate. I know it would make more sense, and I was actually considering this strongly until I was presented with the best reason in the world to never do this. We had a Memorial Day party at the house and as usual everyone wanted to hear different types of music, so I plugged the audio cable into our stereo system so people could hook up their iPods and share their own playlists. One of our guests was playing the music from his phone. It was a song everyone loved. We were jamming. Hands in the air, arms swaying from side to side, hips gyrating. Then his phone rang and the music stopped. He was this close to being beat down. How embarrassing.

U-verse TV - AT&T U-verse is a lovely creature. Hands down, it's the best cable provider I've ever had. I cannot tell you how many times I've been at work or various other places and remembered a show I wanted to record. Many of these times I've not had a computer with internet connection handy. No worries now. I can get on my phone, pull up my handy U-verse app and with a few clicks, I have my show recorded. I can look at everything that is already on the DVR and delete some things if necessary. Maybe I had already scheduled that show to record? I can look at the scheduled shows to be sure. Genius.

AP Mobile - For news buffs like myself, you never have to be out of the loop. If you're hiding out in a cave and the sky is falling, you'll get a breaking news alert. When you don't feel like playing Bejeweled and you've caught up on all your email, you can read through the latest headlines while sitting in that waiting room trying your best to look busy. Local, national, international, outerspace. It's all at your fingertips.

Sound Recorder Goes Digital

There are so many ways that a digital sound recorder can be of help to you. For students, it can be used to keep a record of the very important lectures for future reference. For researchers, a recorder is necessary to take notes and hold interviews. I can actually give you as many examples of its functions as you want. The main point here is that for any kind of task that you need to take on that needs some kind of recording, you will find that digital sound recorders can make your life easier.

Aside from the advantages mentioned above, these are the most significant benefits that you can get from this device. First of all, a digital sound recorder has the ability to record in almost every audio format. This is good as it can make it easier for you to transfer the files to your computer when you are finished.

Moreover, these digital audio recorders are designed to allow you to make extended hours of recording without the need for you to transfer files. This is very attractive for those who often spend time on the road and therefore has no way to transfer the files to a computer.

If you have decided that you would need a digital sound recorder, then you must keep in mind some things before you make your purchase. It is very important that you ask about the features of the digital audio recorder that you are considering buying. The most ideal feature of an audio recorder is its ability to store longer hours of audio recording without compromising the quality. You have to be cautious of some brands that are so proud to say that their product has enormous memory capacity, but the quality is not even close to being fine.

You would also want your digital audio recorder to be sensitive, but not so much that it also records background sound. The sound recorder that you will want is something that can filter the unnecessary sound so that you can get the clearest possible recording. You will find a lot of brands that offer good sound with sensitive microphone without getting the background noise.

You may also want a digital sound recorder that can be used to record even the conversations held over landline phones or mobile phones. These can prove to be very useful if you need to conduct phone interviews.

Say Goodbye to Virus

What is a virus and how did I get it?

The word virus has now become synonymous with any unwanted malicious software. The new term now is malware which is short for malicious software. You probably have heard quite a few of the different types of malware out on the internet. There are viruses, spyware, adaware, keyloggers, and lots more. Some range from pretty harmless to potentially dangerous.

New viruses come out everyday, but if you are running updated security software and have updated your windows, you probably don't have to worry about them. Most viruses exploit the bugs or loopholes in software like your internet browser and windows. It is vital to keep updated with the most recent patches as to not be vulnerable against these kinds of attacks. Sometimes you can be tricked into running a virus program or visiting a malicious website. It happens. Sometimes a friend's computer might get infected and then sends out emails to all of their contacts.

What to do

So, time to learn how to get rid of a virus on my laptop computer. Ideally, you would want to stop the virus before it gets on your computer. If you already have the virus on your system then it's critical to remove it as soon as possible to reduce how much damage it can do. Usually most viruses are fairly harmless and just try to inundate you with ads. You really need to get antivirus or security software to scan your computer to fix it. Even if you remove the virus, there can be remnants of it on your computer and the only way to know if you got rid of it is to scan it with an antivirus scanner.

Security software and antivirus is so critical to keeping your computer clean if you browse the internet. When picking a good internet security software, you should go with a trusted name. Another factor is what features it has. The more features, the more protection you receive, but there is also a thing called overhead. Overhead is the computing power needed to run the security software. More overhead means it takes away computing power from what you're really trying to do such as browsing the web or watching a video. If you have a new computer this is probably not that big of a factor.

iPod Changes Your Listening Lifestyle

Just a few short years ago, everybody was still listening to CDs and even tapes. But then the iPod came along and changed everything about how people listen to their music.

The iPod is basically just a music player, albeit a fancy one with the ability to store music digitally. The great thing about this device is that it is so small, you can store it anywhere. Listen to it when you are in a boring business meeting or when you are driving home from a long day of work.

The battery may be one of the most important parts of the iPod. Typically, charging your iPod should take 4-6 hours depending on model and battery size. This can also be less depending on the type of charger you are using.

You want to have a good screen on your iPod as well. The capability to play video clips is no less amazing. And the power to access the Internet is also amazing.

The hard drive is an important spec to check as well. The larger it is, the more music you will be able to take with you. For example, an Apple 8GB iPod nano is capable of holding 2,000 songs or eight hours of video, or a combination of both. It is truly the biggest advantage to owning one of these amazing things.

The iPod generally comes with a pair of earbuds, but you may want regular headphones. If you are able to spend more, you could look at medium-end headphones which are larger than these very small type headphones.

A good pair of headphones will set you out some money, but a basic set isn't much. Another option to consider when choosing headphones are wireless headphones. Wireless headphones cut the headphone cord and afford total freedom of movement.

If you're they type of person you likes to take things apart, you can get a set of tools for dismantling your iPod. If the person who chooses to do a DIY repair is fortunate enough to have a few broken iPods laying around, he can experiment with those, and then try tackling his primary phone.

5th Pay-Out: Sony Ericson Z610i

The wait was a no joke, swear! Paypal pissed me off since the start of February of 2008. The withdrawal process was pending for about two weeks. And I never read any mail from them explaining why and when it will be resolved. They emailed me but it was too late. I was already irritated of their service and seemed to lose hope, since I do not know whether I will still be able to get my money or it will just be a T.Y.

But somehow I felt relieved when my withdrawal status changed to complete. Yipeee! Does it call for a celebration? Hmmm...Le'mme think of that first. The thrifty gal, alright!

As always, the fruit of labor was spent to something worthy. Yea, I shared it to some peeps close to me and I always feel good whenever I do that. And as what I have promised myself-an investment for every pay-out, be it small or big, I still wanna see the fruit of labor I have worked for every time.

And for my 4th pay-out...

st Feature I love about this phone...
